About Living Democracy
As an extension of #KSUnite, the K-State Union Program Council has collaborated with the Beach Museum of Art and the Department of Art to bring Los Angeles-based artist Linda Pollack to campus as an artist in residence.
Pollack is the organizer of Living Democracy, a program that explores civil discourse, social justice and public life in the K-state community.
Living Democracy offers a platform for students to engage in events addressing the challenges and potential of living in a democratic society. Pollack recruits a variety of guests and develops events that address topics that shape everyday lives, such as voting, immigration, and food. The months of February thru April offer many opportunities to get involved with the project. The goal of Living Democracy is to celebrate and deepen the rich shared civic life of the KSU community.
New work by KSU art students, created with the Prairie Fire Printmakers, are featured in "Living Democracy in Print”, on view in the William T. Kemper Art Gallery at the K-state Student Union thru March 9. Along with the vibrant screen prints on display, the gallery becomes a meeting place where people can kick back and discuss what's on their minds.
Award-winning filmmaker, Peter Bratt will screen and discuss his new documentary, “Dolores,” a portrait of United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the K-state Alumni Center. The following weekend, Mary Beth Tinker, of the groundbreaking 1969 Supreme Court Case, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District, will address freedom of expression, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Wildcat Chamber. A discussion led by Micah Kubic, Executive Director, Kansas ACLU at 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 20 will focus on the right to vote and how Kansas is playing a large role in our voting laws.
